Taxi Driver Burns to Death after Collision with Fuel Tanker

A taxi driver has been burnt to death in a multiple-car crash at Asiakwa Junction on the Bunso-Accra Highway.

The accident was caused when a fully loaded 54,000-liter petrol DAF tanker had its bulk tank detach from the cab along the road, colliding with vehicles in its path.

Eyewitnesses say the tank landed on one taxi with registration number GW 3254-13 which subsequently burst into flames alongside its trapped driver.

The fatal accident occurred on Monday and was confirmed by the Eastern Regional Fire Service in a statement.

“On Monday, July 29, 2024, a severe accident at Asiakwa Junction on the Bunso-Accra Highway involved a fully loaded 54,000-liter petrol DAF tanker, two Mazda Demios, and a Hyundai truck, leading to a significant vehicular fire due to fuel spillage.

“The collision caused extensive fire damage, with the detached bulk tank of the DAF tanker (GC 1054-11) and one Mazda Demio (GW 3254-13) completely burnt. Another Mazda Demio (CR 1182-19), the Hyundai truck (WR 4108-13), and the cowl of the DAF tanker suffered partial damage.”

Firefighters from the Bunso Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the incident to contain the blaze and curtail further casualties.

“The blaze was contained within 35 minutes and fully extinguished in an hour and 15 minutes.”

Meanwhile, two other people were injured.
