Confederations CUP: Dreams FC Advance To Quarter-finals

Dreams Football Club finished on top of Group C in their CAF Confederations Cup to advance along with Nigerian side Rivers United to the knockout stage.

After six games, the Still Believe lads amassed 12 points from four wins and two losses.

They advanced and topped the log despite their 2-1 loss in their last group game against Rivers United on Sunday.

With a 4-goal difference, the Ghanaian club successfully topped the group ahead of the Nigerians, who had a 2-goal difference.

Dreams are the first Ghana Premier League club to reach the knockout round of the CAF Confederations Cup since Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak in 2004.

Coach Karim Zito though wasn’t impressed with the defeat in the last game, expressed joy at the qualification.

“Our first objective was to win or draw but our main purpose was to qualify. Now that we have achieved our goals, we won’t talk about the scores anymore.”

He is now focused on preparing his team for the second round.

“We are heading back home to prepare for the second stage of the competition.”

The eight clubs to advance to the quarter-finals include defending Champions USM Alger, Dreams FC, Egyptian side Modern Future, Rivers United, RS Berkane from Morocco, Stade Malien from Mali, Abu Salem from Libya and Zamalek from Egypt.

Out of the eight, four are previous champions who will be seeking to leverage their past glory for many more, while, Rivers United, Dreams FC, Abu Salem and Modern Future will be looking forward to writing history.

Draws for the quarter-finals will take place on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
