PURC Reduces Electricity Tariff

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs in its latest review.

The Commission in a statement announced the review for water and electricity which takes effect on April 1 and ends on April 30.

It marks the second consecutive downward review in electricity tariffs since 2022.

The PURC in its statement said, “Having considered all the underlying factors, the Commission wishes to announce that, there will be no change (0%) in the electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers (0 30kWh), as well as for residential consumers within the consumption bracket of 0-300kWh. There will however be an average reduction in electricity tariffs of 6.56% for residential consumers within the consumption bracket of 301kWh and above.

“There will however be an average reduction in electricity tariffs of 6.56% for residential consumers within the consumption bracket of 301kWh and above. Tariffs within the 0-300kWh for the non-residential class of consumers remain the same with no change in their rates. However, consumers within 301kWh and above class will experience an average reduction of 4.98%.”

For Water, the PURC said it will remain unchanged.

“Water Tariffs for all customer classes remain unchanged for the period under review.”

The Commission said the decision was arrived at after considering the generational mix, exchange rate, inflation and fuel prices.

In their last review, the electricity tariff was reduced by 1.52% while water increased by 0.34%.
