Uni-Jay Fashion Credits Otumfuo for Her Success
The Chief Executive Officer of Uni-Jay Company Limited, Mrs. Janet Abobigu, has attributed success in the fashion industry to support from the King of the Asante kingdom, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
After beginning her enterprise in 1986 on the veranda of her parents in a compound house having graduated from training as a seamstress, Mrs Abobigu moved to a kiosk and then a rented facility in 1992.
Sharing her journey during the launch of the “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” on Friday, October 10, she said she was sponsored to an exhibition in the United Kingdom (UK) and later to the United States of America in 2003 by the occupant of the Golden Stool during which she learnt the use of industrial sewing machines and incorporated it into her business.
“I owe what I am today to Otumfuo Osei Tutu,” she said. “In 2003, he took me to London for an exhibition. I worked there for two weeks learning how to sew with industrial sewing machines. From there he took me to Atlanta for another exhibition. I learnt modernized sewing and returned to set up my business….He gave me a space to begin it.”
Mrs Abobigu couldn’t hide her admiration for the King.
“I am a northerner and that would have disqualified me in some jurisdictions but for the hospitality of Asantes, I gained the opportunity. This is also evident in the establishment of the Zongo community and its location in the Kingdom.”
Uni-Jay Company Limited identifies itself as a garment manufacturer with a focus on uniforms, Personal Protective Equipment, Hospital Scrubs, security wear, specialized clothing and bespoke women’s wear driven by Quality, Excellent craftsmanship and Community, the company’s website reads.
It also boasts of 350 employees.
The company has won a plethora of awards including the Ayekoo Business Excellence Award in 2006; Regional Best Company of the Year, Fashion Company of the Year and the Chamber Business Woman of the Year in 2017 from the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and; Women empowerment Icon award during the 5th Annual Global Officials of Dignity Awards, 2018.
She also won Best Fashion Company at the Annual Chamber Business Awards in 2018; Best Company in Textiles and Garments Industry in 2019 and; African KAIZEN AWARD in 2019.
