Plot To Oust IGP: Leaked Tape Seems Doctored – Atta Akyea
In a significant development surrounding the tape purporting to contain a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, Chairman of the ad-hoc committee has raised doubts about the authenticity of the recording, suggesting that it “seems doctored.”
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, Samuel Atta Akyea expressed his concerns regarding the tape’s integrity.
He noted that the version of the tape circulating on social media appears to be a truncated version compared to the more extensive tape later submitted to the committee by former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Daniel Bugri Naabu.
“It seems to be the case, because the second tape is a long conversation,” he told journalists on Wednesday.
The leaked tape in question has generated widespread discussions and debate. Bugri Naabu, in a previous committee appearance, confirmed the tape’s authenticity.
The recording features a conversation involving Bugri Naabu and two senior Police Officers, namely COP Alex Mensah and Supt. George Asare.
In the conversation, they discuss plans for the removal of the IGP with the alleged aim of replacing him with an IGP that will be sympathetic to the NPP and aid it win the 2024 elections.
During his testimony before the committee Tuesday, Dr Akuffo Dampare vehemently denied the allegations made against him by the implicated police officers. He emphasised that these unsubstantiated claims had caused significant distress to his family.
Additionally, Dampare refuted any involvement in a conspiracy to secretly record conversations involving the three police officers.
The doubts raised by MP Samuel Atta Akyea add a new layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation into the leaked tape, underscoring the need for a thorough examination of the evidence presented before any conclusions are drawn.
