Atta Mills Wasn’t After The Power That Came With Presidency- Asantehene
The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has asserted that the late Prof John Evans Atta Mills unlike many other politicians seeking Presidency was not after the power that came with it.
He finds Prof Mills selfless and humble.
“He was humble and not selfish. He was selfless. You realise that he was not after Presidency and the power that came with it,” he testified of the former President of Ghana.
Delving into some incidents that gave him this conviction about the former President, Otumfuo recalled, “His humility while he was vice president under Rawlings was exceptional. When we went on the general elections {in December 2000} and Kufuor won, he called me to ask me to inform Kufuor that he was not going to contest the results. On 29th December 2000, he called to tell me they {NDC} held a meeting {on the election} but said ‘I won’t do anything to disrupt our democracy’.”
On another instance, His Majesty recounted, “There was a disagreement between him and Rawlings as a result of {political} appointments. He called me for my intervention. I wanted to meet all the parties at his house but he insisted they all met at my house in the capital.
“He came in this small car though he was President at the time. When it was his turn to speak, he was so calm and meek.”
His Majesty recollected memories of Prof JEA Mills when the Board of the John Evans Atta (JEA) Mills Memorial Heritage paid a working visit to the King to invite him to Chair their upcoming lecture later this month.
