AirtelTigo Changes Name
AirtelTigo Ghana has announced a change in name two years after the government’s takeover.
It will now be called AT.
In an SMS, the company informed customers about the development.
“Dear Customer, We’re happy to announce to you that AirtelTigo is now AT, so going forward, call us AT. Life is simple!”
In a telephone interview with a customer care personnel of the company, it was confirmed that the new name will be effective on July 1, 2023.
Asked why a new name has been coined, he said such decisions are exclusive to the company’s management.
It was reported earlier this year that the Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful personally informed workers of the company that there was a new buyer.
Techgh24 (News Ghana) is cited to have reported that the various agencies and partners of AirtelTigo had been informed about the coming of the new buyer and the forthcoming rebranding of the company.
In 2017, Bharti Airtel BRTI.NS merged with Millicom’s Tigo MICsdb.ST in Ghana to become AirtelTigo to increase their market share. Their agreement received the nod of the National Communication Authority in September.
In 2021 the government of Ghana took over the company for US$1 when the telco left the country.
