Mass SIM Re-registration Exercise Ends
The mass SIM re-registration exercise by telecommunication companies at the instigation of the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation has come to an end.
It ended on May 31, 2023.
This means that from today, June 1, 2023, only new SIM cards will be registered in the country.
The SIM re-registration exercise began in October 2021 and has been extended up until now following some hurdles that confronted subscribers.
During a press conference on April 26, 2023, the National Communication Authority (NCA) said its data shows active SIM cards were 36, 571,256 out of which 25, 448,962 had completed stages one and two of the registration exercise with the Ghana card.
The remaining 11,112,295 were unregistered SIM cards which had been exempted from deactivation based on various demographics, the Director-General of NCA, Joseph Anokye, revealed.
He said at the time that those sim cards would be deactivated after May 2023 and won’t have a chance to re-register.
As of April, he said 6,178,452 SIMs had been deactivated since the beginning of the registration exercise.
“They are SIMs that completed stage one but did not complete stage two. “If anyone completes stage one it’s presupposed that they have the Ghana card, began the process but did not do stage two and so they’ve been completely delinked from the system”, Mr Anokye said.
