No Single Drug can Provide a Universal Cure for all STIs, Says Dr
Dr. Albert Adusei Dua, Senior Medical Officer at the Family Medicine Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has emphasised that it is not possible for a single drug to cure more than one sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Speaking on Nkwantannanso, Dr. Dua explained that STIs can be caused by various agents, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, or fungi. Each type of infection requires specific treatment options tailored to its underlying cause.
Therefore, advertisements promoting a single medication claiming to cure all STIs are misleading and should not be relied upon.
“It is funny when people advertise a medicine that cures all STIs. It is important to understand that no single drug can provide a universal cure for all STIs,” he stated.
To ensure proper treatment and management, Dr. urged individuals experiencing symptoms of an STI to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility. This allows healthcare professionals to accurately diagnose the specific infection and prescribe the appropriate treatment regimen.
The doctor also highlighted the potential complications associated with STIs and stressed the importance of timely medical care.
“Left untreated, STIs can lead to severe health consequences, including infertility and congenital deformities. It can weaken the immune system and make individuals more susceptible to other infections,” he said.
“Therefore, it is crucial to undergo testing before engaging in any sexual activity, even if no symptoms are present.”
