Widow Confronts Family Over Exclusion from Late Husband’s Funeral Card
Madam Abena Nkwanta has expressed her disappointment and hurt after discovering that her name was not included on the funeral card of her deceased partner, Kwabena Boateng.
During an appearance on the Masem programme, she explained that she had lived with Kwabena for 17 years, and had been an integral part of his life, caring for him in sickness and in health until his death. Despite this, she was not acknowledged on the funeral card.
She added, “I gave him a GHC1,700 loan to start a business.”
When asked if she had a good relationship with him before his death, Abena explained that she left their ‘matrimonial’ home a week before her partner passed away after a disagreement with him.
“We had a disagreement because my husband went for a loan without telling me about it. I reported him to his uncle and that made him angry,” she said.
However, his partner’s family, represented by Kwadwoa Asamoah and Kofi Boateng, claimed that Abena was not legally married to their deceased relative.
They clarified that he had four girlfriends, of whom Abena was one. Therefore, they did not recognize her as a legal wife.
The family acknowledged providing financial support to her for her upkeep in accordance with Akan tradition after the loss of a spouse.
However, they maintained that they had done so out of sympathy and not because they acknowledged her as a legal wife.
The situation has caused tension and confusion between Abena and Kwabena Boateng’s family.
Abena Nkwanta is hurt by the exclusion from the funeral card and the lack of recognition for her role in her late partner’s life.
The matter remains unresolved, leaving her with unanswered questions and unresolved emotions.
