ECG Metres are not Sold on the Market -Director
The Director in charge of the Ashanti Region’s Strategic Business Unit of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Engineer David Asamoah has clarified that ECG is the sole provider of electricity metres, and that they are not sold on the market.
Speaking on Nkwantannanso, he explained that even if the Ministry of Energy wants to distribute metres, ECG tests them before proceeding to distribute them to ensure their quality.
“ECG is the only entity authorised to issue electricity metres. We have received reports of some people importing electricity metres into the country. It is illegal,” he said.
He also responded to claims made by the Presiding Member of the Amansie South District Assembly, Hon. Kwame Amponsah, regarding revenue collection lapses in his district.
In an earlier interview, Hon. Amponsah blamed ECG for the non-payment of bills in his district. He pleaded for ECG to bring bills earlier so that customers can pay their bills promptly.
“If you don’t bring me bills, how can I pay? You can’t just disconnect my metre and demand a one year bill in a day,” he lamented.
According to Mr. Asamoah, if customers do not acquire their metres through the proper procedure, they will not receive a bill and will only be considered as users of electricity rather than ECG customers.
Recently, it was revealed that there were several metres consuming power with no bills in Amansie South District for close to two years.
As a result, the revenue task force of ECG disconnected the rented apartment of the Amansie South District Chief Executive (DCE) for engaging in illegal connection by running power cables through an adjoining plot to his house. .
However, the DCE has denied engaging in such an act.
