I will Fund Pre-University Education, Says Minister

The Education Minister, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has revealed plans to provide support for pre-university  education. He vowed to fund all expenses related to the  education as it has the potential to positively influence the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) outcomes.

During his four-day tour in the Ashanti Region, he explained that the students’ exposure to pre-university would inspire them to work harder to pass the WASSCE and subsequently gain admission into tertiary institutions.

He noted “It is important for final year students to have a feel of the university experience which will aid them to learn well”.

 This support will be extended to selected schools such as OKESS, Kumasi Girls SHS, Christ the King Catholic SHS and Kumasi High School. 

Hon. Dr. Adutwum also expressed concern about students’ ability to develop and enhance their interests in reading, and he urged Head Teachers to prioritise teaching and learning of the English Language. He believes this will help students excel in the WASSCE.

As part of his aim for the four-day tour in the Ashanti Region, the Minister addressed issues related to students’ welfare, academic excellence, and general development of senior high education in the country. He emphasised that English language is a key factor in academic performance in all other subjects since they are all communicated in English. 

Therefore, he urged Head Teachers to institute extra English Language and Mathematics classes for the students to help bridge gaps and deal with lapses that may contribute to failure. The Ministry and the Ghana Education Service will provide extra teachers to take care of such exploits if there are insufficient teachers.

The Minister also revealed plans to support existing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) piloting schools with guidance, resources, and tuition support by bringing on board new teachers. He announced support for the Bosomtwe Girls’ STEM High School.
