Fight Against Galamsey: Chief of Atwima Agogo Calls For All Hands on Deck
The Chief of Atwima Agogo, in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Nana Osei Kwame, has appealed to all stakeholders to support the government in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey). He said that it is a daunting task.
In a community engagement with the stakeholders and leadership of Atwima Mponua District Assembly, led by their District Chief Executive, Honourable Isaac Kofi Marfo, he cautioned that the country may face serious crisis in the near future if the galamsey menace is not addressed.
“Galamsey activities in the River Offin at Kotokuom has become unbearable, destroying farmlands and river bodies and there is a need to find a lasting solution,” he said.
The District Chief Executive commended Nana Osei Kwame for his effort, and assured the people of Kotokuom of his commitment to ensure that those behind the galamsey are brought to book as soon as possible.
The galamsey activities in the area are believed to be led by a group identified as the 11 Wise Men who employ foreigners from Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and China to engage in galamsey.
