Don’t Play Politics With Appiatse; Benito Bio Tells Mahama
The Chairperson of the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee, Benito Owusu Bio has urged the former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama to avoid playing politics over the Appiatse disaster.
This was after the former president visited the victims of the Appiatse explosion and in his submissions, advised the President to compensate the victims.
In response, Benito who is also a deputy Lands minister indicated that the comments by Mahama are political.
“The Appiatse incident was very tragic, and we call on all to approach it devoid of any partisan politics.”
He also noted that the government is not enjoined by any law to compensate victims of the incident.
“Legally, however, it is not for Government to compensate victims of the incident.”
That notwithstanding, Benito says the Ministry of Lands is “committed through the Appiatse Support Fund, to raise enough funds to reconstruct the community and support the victims of the incident transparently and with the highest standards of integrity”.
Benito added that “the Committee will continue to work with the Ministry as well as the chiefs and people of the community to ensure the speedy completion of the reconstruction of the community”.
He, however, appreciated the efforts of the former president in visiting and donating to the community members.
