Births And Deaths Registry Launches 2022 Mass Mobile Registration Exercise

The 2022 Mass Mobile Registration Exercise has been launched in Accra. The year-long exercise being spearheaded by the Births and Deaths Registry will witness the registration and issuance of free birth certificates to children from the age of zero to twelve months across the country.

Within the period, officials will be undertaking public education and sensitization activities and also make registration accessible.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Dan Botwe called for intensified education on the need for people to always register the birth or death of their relatives.

This, he noted, will significantly help the country to build a robust database of the population and help development planning.

Mr Botwe charged the media to lead the charge by making good use of their platforms to propagate this key development agenda.

The Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1027 of 2020 mandates the Registry to record all births and deaths in the country.

This is in tandem with the SDG sixteen-point-nine which requires governments to provide a legal identity including free birth registration.

Mr Botwe, who is also Member of Parliament (MP) for Okere, said the Government is committed to strengthening the operations of the Births and Deaths Registry through the enactment of relevant legislations and the provision of logistics.

He spoke more on the role of stakeholders on the registration of births and deaths.

The Acting Registrar of Births and Deaths, Henrietta Lamptey said the Registry last year recorded seventy percent of all new births with only seventeen percent deaths registered in the country.

She said for Ghana to attain the Universal Vital Registration Coverage by 2030, the total registration should be more than ninety-five percent.

She highlighted the importance of timely capture of relevant data towards national development.

The sector minister handed over more than two hundred tablets to the Registry to facilitate the Mass Registration exercise and eight vehicles to enhance administrative operations at the regional level.
