3 Including Vormawor File For Info On Budget For Feeding Persons In Police Custody

Democracy Hub and Democratic Accountability Lab, two non-governmental organisations, and the fixthecountry group have filed a Right to Information request with the Ghana Police service for data on the budget for feeding persons in police custody.

The group is requesting information about the approved budget for feeding persons in police custody in 2022, the amount spent on feeding the individuals in custody at the Ashaiman Police Station between February 11-March 17 2022, the daily menu provided to the individuals in custody at the Ashaiman Police Station between February 11-March 17 2022, and the number of times persons in police custody are fed daily.

It also wants to know about the number of people who spent more than 24 hours in custody of the police at the Ashaiman Police station between February 11-March 17 2022.

Additionally, it wants information about the budgetary allocation for first aid medication for 2020; 2021, and 2022; for persons in police custody, the number of people in Police custody who fell sick and required a hospital visit without hospitalisation between January 2020 and 21st March 2022, the number of people who fell sick; and were given medication without requiring a hospital visit between January 2020 and 21st March 2022.

Finally, it wants to know the number of persons who have died while in Police custody between January 2020 and 21st March 2022.

The group is seeking a copy of the Standard Operation Procedures of the Ghana Police Service regarding donations by private citizens and private organisations to persons in police custody, a copy of the Standard Operation Procedures of the Ghana Police Service regarding donations by private citizens to the Ghana Police Service as an institution and a copy of the Ghana Police Service Instructions.

The Ghana Police Service is to provide these within 14 days, the group ordered.

This comes in the wake of a rejected food donation for persons in the custody of the Ashaiman Police from the fixthecountry convenor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was until last week held in Ashaiman police custody for allegedly threatening to overthrow the Akufo-Addo led government.

The rejection of the donation, according to the police, was because it is the sole responsibility of the government to provide food for such, plus, it violated the Standard Operation of the Police Service.

But according to the activist, his gesture was not accompanied by bad intentions except for the fact that he noticed how hungry inmates go in police custody.

Below are the joint requests of the three groups:
